Auditors Trapped in the Paper Comfort Zone
Auditing typically starts with verification of Compliance to verify whether external and internal regulations are met. Although this process is very important, it is mostly a ’paper exercise’ not requiring auditors with large technical background or field experience. Scrutiny at desktop level is usually time consuming, creating time constraints for the equally necessary walk-throughs and field-interviews. This explains why many generic audits miss the total picture, thus delivering flawed conclusions to management. They fall short of identifying the other side of the coin, the shop floor reality (Performance), the area beyond the ‘paper comfort zone’.
